Diagnosing and Treating Scabies

Diagnosing and Treating Scabies

Scabies is an infestation of the skin caused by the human itch mite. These microscopic scabies mite burrows into the upper layer of the skin where it lives and lays its eggs. The most common symptoms of scabies are intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash. The scabies mite usually is spread by direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person who has scabies.

Scabies can be found worldwide and affect people of all races and social classes. Scabies can spread rapidly under crowded conditions where close body and skin contact is very frequent. Scabies causes intense itching. Small blisters and red patches will form on the skin above each mite and turn itchy as a result of reacting to the mite and its feces.

Scratching causes infections.Bacteria spreads and infects that scratched area. It is therefore important to realize that scabies is not caused by poor hygiene. Whiles scabies it is highly contagious, it is able to be treated effectively, to quell the itching and restore your life to the way it was before you contracted this skin condition.

Dermatologists can often diagnose scabies by visually examining a patient’s skin from head to toe. The dermatologist is able to identify this skin condition by scraping off a tiny bit of skin. This is a painless process. The dermatologist will then put the skin on a glass slide and look at the slide under a microscope. If your dermatologist sees scabies mites or their eggs, it is certain that you have scabies.

Treatment is essential for getting rid of scabies. The most common products used to kill scabies mites are called scabicides. Scabicides used to treat human scabies are available only with a doctor’s prescription. No “over-the-counter” (non-prescription) products have been tested and approved to treat human scabies.

Most people can be cured with a medicine that they apply to their skin. These medicines are often applied to all skin from the neck down. Infants and young children often need treatment for their scalp and face, too. A dermatologist will provide specific instructions to follow.

Getting rid of mites and preventing scabies from occurring again requires more than using skincare treatments and taking pills. You will need to wash clothes, bedding, and towels to in order get rid of mites that may have fallen off your skin. You also should vacuum your entire home. You would also need to cut your nails, and clean under them thoroughly to remove any mites or eggs that may be present. You should also thoroughly vacuum your rugs, furniture, bedding, and car interior and throw the vacuum-cleaner bag away when finished.
