Before you start treatment and go to see your doctor and dermatologist make sure that they are certified and have the necessary medical requirements. Not all practitioners are the same and you should be cautious to find one that knows the latest developments and can treat you at the highest level. There are many treatments and options that a good dermatologist will consider as part of the overall treatment and before providing medication to treat your acne.

Meet Your Dermatologist

If you have had limited success with other options to care of your acne condition it may be worthwhile looking for a dermatologist to provide assistance and medication for your acne. Your dermatologist will want to know a great deal about you and your medical history. Firstly the dermatologist will want basic information filled out on a form.

Then he will ask about your acne, the state and stage of your acne and where the acne is on your body. Then he will want to know other aspects of your medical history. He will ask you if you suffer from any other allergies because it may be that you are not looking at acne but another skin condition. Similarly he will want to know if you suffer from other skin conditions like eczema and other skin inflammation issues. This is important because the skin under these conditions is far more sensitive to medication. What other medication or treatments are you involved in should be reported to the dermatologist. You should tell him what medication you have been taking particularly for your acne. Ideally you should bring them with you or write down the names. He can identify the active and inactive ingredients in the over-the-counter treatments and determine how to proceed. Through further discussion the dermatologist will want more information about hereditary elements to your acne. What elements make it worse and better? What medication helps the most? He may want to know, if you are female, if your period, make up or similar factors make the acne it worse.

As a patient you need realize that the treatment will not show immediate results and may take some time before any real results begin to appear. Importantly is that you need to continue with the course of medication and listen to the dermatologist. You may have good days and bad days but keep taking the medication prescribed. Some medication can take up to 6 weeks to provide any change.

As part of a good working relationship you should feel comfortable to be in touch with your dermatologist if any of treatments are bothering you or you have any questions that you didn’t mention at your last meeting or if you’re on a course of drugs and need a further prescription. You should feel that your dermatologist is part of a team dealing with your acne.

Topical medication

This form of medication comes in the form of a cream, gels and solutions to reach directly at the skins pours and medicate the area. The advantage of these forms of medication is the direct application to the problem and the reduced side effects. The use of topical medication is a ‘test and fail’ type procedure to identify the best active ingredients for your acne. The applicator is usually a cotton swab and can make, applying the ointments easy and very unproblematic for patients travelling around.

Topical retinoids are a standard retinoid medication primarily because it is a good medication to take at the beginning of your acne condition with black and white heads but plays an effective role in treating acne in its advanced and inflamed forms.

The cream is based on vitamin A and are cotyletic , which make s the skin shed more easily limiting the amount the pours can remain plugged reducing the formation of black and white heads effects on the acne. It therefore has a direct affect on the pours in general and helps to reduce inflammation lesions.

Topical antibiotics

More effective than the regular topical medication options, clinadamycin and erythromycin are both effective antibiotics, providing quick, effective treatment for imflamatory acne. These drugs can join as part of a wider treatment with benzoyl peroxide which is a well used over-the-counter drug and other oral antibiotics.

Oral antibiotics

Tetrcyclines effectively treat the P. acne and go directly reduce the effects of the bacteria instead of killing it. The drug has an anti inflammatory ingredient which is important in treating advanced acne. The drug can be very effective and you will see signs within a week. The papules and the pustules will begin to flatten and disappear while the acne in general should be treated effectively. After effective treatment a discussion with your dermatologist will decide when to begin reducing the dosage.

Minocycline is very effective and performs very well with food which reduces the stomach aches connected with versions that should be taken without food.

Doxycycline is a form of Tetrcyclines and like Minocycline performs well with food. It has two distinctive advantages over Minocycline. Firstly it’s cheaper than its expensive counterpart and does not have the sever side effected associated with Minocycline.

All these treatments and medications have side effects to one degree or another. It should be part of the treatment with your dermatologist to responsibly discuss the options and side effects associated with each treatment so you are completely informed.
